Whiplash Injury Common After a Rear-End Car Crash
Those in New Jersey who have ever been rear-ended while driving are probably familiar with whiplash injuries. Whiplash is considered the most common injury after a rear-end car crash. Some people may not think this type of injury can have severe consequences, but this is far from the truth. Whiplash injuries can be felt for a lifetime, even with medical and rehabilitative treatments.
Whiplash is often called a neck sprain. When involved in a rear-end collision, one’s neck is forced in a swift backward then forward motion. This causes the muscles and ligaments in the neck and upper back to be over-stretched, resulting in pain. Pain, however, is not the only symptom of whiplash.
There are actually numerous symptoms associated with whiplash. While pain is the most common, others include muscle tightness or spasms, headaches, dizziness and difficulty swallowing — or other throat injuries. Severe whiplash can even cause injury to joints, cervical discs and nerves.
Numerous individuals can, with the right treatments, recover from whiplash injuries. There are others, though, who may always feel the pain or other affects. These often debilitating injuries can completely change how one lives life — both at home and on a professional level. If injured in a rear-end car crash, one may be entitled to compensation for any damages sustained. A personal injury claim may be filed in a New Jersey civil court in an effort to seek relief for any related expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering that one endured as a result of the wreck.
