New Jersey Wrong-Way Collision Kills 2, Injures 2

Two people died as a result of a head-on collision on Route 49, and two others were hurt after the Aug. 8 two-vehicle accident. The accident occurred near the old Penn-Salem Marina around 12:45 p.m. in the eastbound lane of Route 49 when a 2005 Toyota Corolla traveling in the west lane crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 2013 Ford Escape.

The 51-year-old Pennsylvania man driving the Corolla died at the crash site, and the passenger was his 57-year-old girlfriend from Salem. She was extracted from the vehicle, and she was airlifted to a hospital but died later. A representative of the Pennsville Police Department said that the man wore his seat belt, but the woman did not. The 69-year-old driver of the Escape and his 59-year-old wife, from Pennsylvania, suffered minor injuries and were taken to different hospitals.

Debris from the crash littered the road, and traffic in both directions was detoured. Authorities do not know why the Corolla crossed into oncoming traffic but think a medical problem could have occurred.
