Even Broken Bones Can Lead to Catastrophic Consequences
When you get into a car crash, there is a potential for you to suffer from a number of serious injuries. You may have a traumatic brain injury, spinal injuries or broken bones that may not heal as expected.
One of the most commonly broken bones is the scaphoid (just above the radius), which is located in the wrist. It’s aptly named after the scaphoid bone, which is the smallest bone that you can find in your wrist. Since it’s so small, it has a higher chance of breaking when force is applied.
In many cases, people suffer from nondisplaced fractures, which heal well on their own. However, severe crashes are different. They may cause shattering impacts that end up displacing broken bones and leaving your wrist in poor condition. There are eight bones in the wrist that must move well together. If even one is out of place, it can cause dysfunction, pain and other issues.
When bones are unstable following a crash, you may need to go through surgery to have the break repaired. There may also be a high risk of infection if the bone broke through the skin, which is something that your medical team will watch out for.
In worst-case scenarios, those with severely broken bones may need to consider amputation. This might be something to consider if the patient would have significant pain, has a worsening infection or the hand or wrist cannot be saved.
Broken bones don’t always seem serious, but they can be. If you’re involved in a crash and break bones, you may want to file a claim and seek compensation for the losses you’ve suffered.
