Hit and Run Car Accident Can Ruin a Holiday
The holiday season is here, and while the possibility of an car crash is an ever present danger, it seems to escalate during the holiday season. Drunk drivers, hit and run drivers and distracted drivers are all present on New Jersey roadways. A hit and run car accident that ended in the death of the person who was hit has resulted in charges against the driver.
An off-duty police officer struck a 23-year-old man from Patterson and then fled the scene of the accident. Emergency responders rushed the seriously injured victim to the hospital. He later died as a result of his injuries.
The officer was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Following a lengthy investigation, he was recently found guilty of endangering the victim. He could receive a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. He is no longer with the police force.
The sudden death of a loved one in New Jersey is a horrible pain to bear. It can be doubly so when it is caused by a car accident that may have been prevented or one where prompt treatment of injuries may have been able to save a life. A person who has been impacted by such a tragedy should consult with a personal injury attorney. A lawyer can review the facts of the case and advise the client as to whether a civil suit against the party deemed responsible is a viable option. A successfully litigated claim can provide compensation for medical costs, pain and suffering, and other verifiable losses.
